Zest Bakery opened up in San Carlos, CA back in July of 2010. Owners Patrick and Charissa were not originally sure if they wanted to open a store front, or just rent commercial kitchen space to bake gluten free products in. The decision was made a lot easier when they found a great space to lease near their home. After this, things moved quickly. It only took about two months to build out the kitchen and cafe. Zest was ready for business.
Zest is 100% gluten free. Their cafe offers bakery items, pizza, sandwiches, homemade ice cream, and they serve Barefoot Coffees :-). I asked Charissa if they get customers who are not gluten free in their shop. I was surprised to learn that Zest has a big following in the organic and non-gluten free communities as well. As a matter of fact, Zest likes to test out their new recipes on non-gluten free people. If someone who eats gluten likes the item, and can’t tell that it is gluten free, most likely you will find it on Zest’s menu.
Pictured above is one of Zest’s best sellers, their gluten free lemon poppyseed cake. (It didn’t last very long in our house.)
Zest also is offering gluten free survival kits for Thanksgiving and the holidays. Do it yourself pie crust flour blends, stuffing mixes, and bread crumbs are all available. If you live close by, you can order cheesecakes and pies for the holidays. Their pecan and pumpkin pies are not only gluten free, but also dairy free.
Zest has long range plans to expand into other parts of the Bay Area and offer baking classes. (I am putting in my vote for Zest to come to the South Bay!)
