A good friend of mine discovered a gluten free bakery, Flour Chylde Bakery, at her local Sunnyvale Farmer’s market. I love these new gluten free discoveries. I obviously am a creature of habit. I go to the same Farmer’s Market in Campbell every Sunday, never varying to explore other markets. Well, I learned my lesson today.
I was excited to see that Flour Chylde sells at the West Valley Farmer’s Market right here in Saratoga. We got up early, had some coffee, and then I dragged my husband out of the house because I was worried they would sell out of gluten free baguettes before we got there. If you are gluten free, you know that panicked feeling of missing something spectacular. (This often happened to me when Mariposa Bakery sold out of its famous cinnamon rolls just moments before I got to their booth.)
We found Flour Chylde’s booth quickly and met the owner, Todd. He told me the story about how his whole family found out how they couldn’t eat gluten. Todd worked hard to develop gluten free recipes that would taste as well as their glutenous counterparts. Flour Chylde Bakery is located in Novato, CA. The cafe does sell both gluten and gluten free items in their cafe, though at the farmer’s market we attended all products were gluten free.
If you have a chance to discover and try some of Todd’s delicious gluten free cakes, it is worth it!! We bought and tried the baguette, lemon coconut cake, pumpkin cake, lemon ricotta cake, and a new flavor, chocolate lemon cake. I don’t think I could pick a favorite, though the lemon coconut cake was amazing. Thank goodness these all come in cupcake sizes or we would have burst. They were all so delicious. We shared some with our neighbors and they could not even tell it was gluten free.
