My daughter had the idea to put together one of our favorite cookie mixes into mason jars to give as gifts this year. The jars are easy to make, and they look so pretty with all of the ingredients layered in the mason jars. You can find all of your ingredients, including our favorite cookie salt, Morton Fine Sea Salt, at your local Safeway.

Just because someone is gluten free doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy making homemade cookies! This easy recipe makes the best gluten free chocolate chip cookies! Gift-giving has never been easier with these gluten free cookie mix jars! Layer them up, print the recipe out so they can make the cookies, and wrap a bowl in the jar. It is perfect for any cookie lover.

Are you ready to make these mason jar gifts? I love the flavor mix of cowboy cookies: whole oats, shredded coconut, pecans, and chocolate chips. (The ingredients make such pretty layers in the mason jar!)

Ingredient Notes:

  • Gluten-Free Flour Blend – I tested this recipe with King Arthur Measure For Measure, and Bob’s Red Mill 1:1. Other blends should work as well
  • Xanthan Gum – If your blend doesn’t contain xanthan gum or another binder, add ¾ teaspoon to the jar.
  • Shredded Coconut – Use unsweetened coconut.
  • Whole Rolled Oats – Use gluten free rolled oats. It is a MUST for those who are gluten free.
  • Brown Sugar – feel free to substitute coconut sugar if needed.
  • Chocolate Chips- if your friend is dairy-free, use the Enjoy Life brand because those are free of the Top 8 Allergens.
  • Baking Powder – Use aluminum-free.

Step-By-Step Photos and Directions:

Step 1: Add the gluten free flour blend to the bottom of the mason jars. I add flour first so it doesn’t run down through the layers. One thing that makes these cookie mix jars so attractive is the “layered” look. You want to vary your colorful layers with the white layers.

Step 2: Add the brown sugar and use a spoon to push the layers down.

Step 3: Pour ¼ teaspoon of Morton Sea Salt into the mason jar.

Step 4: Keep layering your ingredients, including baking powder, chocolate chips, and gluten free oats. Pack each layer down as you go.

Step 5: Pour in the last layer of unsweetened shredded coconut. Now, you must fill out a recipe card with the instructions and attach it to the mason jar.

If you keep the mason jars sealed, the cookie mix should last up to 10 weeks in your pantry.

For One Mason Jar:

  • Determine how many mason jars you want to fill.
  • Remove the lids and clean the jars (if they are brand new.) Dry thoroughly.
  • Add the ingredients into the mason jar one at a time to layer the ingredients in this order: gluten free flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt, chocolate chips, gluten free oats, and shredded coconut.

Write out these directions on an index card so the person you give the gift to knows how to make the cookies:

    To make the cookies:

    • 1. Preheat the oven to 350º F.
    • 2. Pour the cookie mix into a large bowl.
    • 3. Add 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 11 tablespoons melted butter.
    • 4. Whisk the wet ingredients to mix.
    • 5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until all of the ingredients are incorporated in the cookie dough.
    • 6. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
    • 7. Use a cookie scoop to drop the cookie dough onto the parchment paper.
    • 8. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven and let cool on a rack.

    Notes

    1. This cookie recipe makes 24 Cowboy Cookies.
    2. I have tested this recipe with King Arthur Measure for Measure GF, Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 GF blend, and Authentic Foods Multi Blend in this recipe. That doesn’t mean others will not work, I just have not tested other flours.
    3. If your gluten free flour blend doesn’t contain Xanthan Gum or Guar Gum, please add ¾ teaspoon.
    4. To make this recipe dairy-free, substitute the butter for vegan butter. Use a dairy free chocolate chip.
    5. It is critical to use certified gluten free oats if you are Celiac. Cross-contamination runs high in regular oats.
    6. These cookies will keep up to 4 days in an airtight container, or up to 4 months in the freezer.

    SPECIAL NOTE

    Please know that every gluten free flour blend has a different starch to grain ratio. If you use a blend I didn’t test, you may need to adjust your moisture levels in your baked goods.

    1. I’m going to try this recipe for some family this Christmas, am I able to make it without the coconut?

      1. If you are making it without coconut, it would change the amount of liquids in making the cookies. Maybe layer my oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe? Or you can use the amount of liquid and amend the liquid amount on the printable recipe tag.

      Loved this recipe. My daughter is eating gluten, soy, lactose and sugar free because of health reasons. I baked following recipe. I’m going to try with monk fruit sweetener. Have you ever added unsweetened cocoa? I want to try. Maybe 1/4 cup?

      1. I am so glad you loved the recipe! If you add cocoa to this recipe, you probably will need to add sugar to offset the bitterness of the cocoa powder. You can make a mix out of any of my gluten free chocolate cookie recipes on the blog! Just mix up the dry ingredients.

        1. I wanted to make these before giving them as gifts: mine turned out a bit…runny for lack of a better word. Not bad, just a little off. May be the flour I used (Namaste 1-for-1 cup): but if that is so, would I just decrease the butter a bit do you think?
          Also wondering if there’s a substitute for the oats (I know it’s unlikely, but wanted to make them for my sister’s family and one kiddo is gluten free but the other can’t have oats). Thanks for any feedback/advice!

        2. Hi Sarah, I haven’t tested that flour in this recipe, but it is starchy. I would recommend adding more flour. If the batter was runny, you may need 1/4 of additional flour. As for the oats, you can easily omit the oats, you would just need more flour to offset the lack of oats because they absorb a lot of liquid. You may want to make a test batch, write down the ingredients and amounts, then once it works well you can layer the ingredients in a jar.
