Has anyone tried Saturn Cafe in Berkeley, CA? It is a vegetarian restaurant located just off Shattuck.
My husband and I attended his 30th reunion picnic in Tilden Park. It was a beautiful sunny day for a potluck picnic in the park. I had baked a BIG batch of gluten free macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies, and made sandwiches for us to eat.
Well, sometimes good intentions are not enough. We drove an hour only to realize we left all of our gluten free food at home.
This has never happened to us before. (This is definitely my big Doh! moment!) There was a tomato dish and some grapes at the picnic that were safe to eat, but after 4 hours of socializing, we were starving!
A quick search of my restaurant database showed that Saturn Cafe was only 15 minutes away. Excited to try someplace new, we made our way down through the hills back to the Berkeley campus area.
We drove to this cafe and couldn’t help but feel like we ended up in the twilight zone.
This restaurant was colorful, old fashioned, and had a very funky hippie vibe.
Gluten free items in the menu were marked with a GF. The staff seemed to understand cross contamination and there is a dedicated gluten free fryer.
We first ordered a turkish coffee shake to split, figuring we needed a caffeine boost for the drive back home.
This shake was incredible. I am really glad David and I split one because we were both wired from the one!
Next we decided to take advantage of the gluten free fryer and ordered these delicious crispy onion strings.
This was our favorite dish. The gluten free homemade ranch dip went perfectly with these crispy onion strings.
For our entrees, David ordered the taquito plate and I ordered a peanut satay vegetable dish over rice. David’s bean taquitos were good. Having the dedicated fryer meant crispy taquitos, something neither of us have had in years. My dish was okay….not great. The vegetables were not cooked enough, making them hard, and the peanut sauce was really heavy and tasted like peanut butter was just dumped on top.
Overall I felt very safe eating at this restaurant. Neither David or I had any reaction to anything we ate.
I am not sure I would eat here again for a main meal, but I would definitely come back for those delicious onion strings. Just an fyi, the service was not the quickest. We were seated at least 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. I wouldn’t come when they are busy or if you are in a hurry.
