This post isn't going to be as long as my typical posts. My goal is to show you how my daughter made the adorable little white chocolate dragonflies she used to top the Gluten Free Pink Lemonade Cupcakes she made. These cake decorating ideas are perfect for spring!
So many of you asked how she did it, and you won't believe how EASY they were to make!! These candy dragonflies would be fun on top of any of these Gluten Free Cupcake recipes.

My daughter saw a tutorial to make chocolate butterflies and knew she wanted to make a spring take on this idea. She was sitting in our backyard since it has been so warm this spring and noticed several dragonflies hanging out near our swimming pool and wanted to make candy in their shape for her spring cupcakes idea.
These white chocolate candy dragonflies make beautiful cake toppers on these Gluten Free Pink Lemonade Cupcakes. These dragonflies would fall into the easy cake decorating for beginners category because they are so easy to make.

Are you ready to see how easy these dragonflies are to make?
The first step is to melt white chocolate. It is important to ensure the white melting chocolate you choose is gluten free, and also that it isn't made on shared equipment with wheat. I love many Wilton products and we have never had a reaction, but many of their sprinkles and candies are made on shared equipment.
Best chocolates for melting:
Add your white melting chocolates to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir. Microwave for 20 seconds and stir, repeat until the candy is melted.
Take a book and open the book. Lay it on the kitchen counter. Place a large piece of wax paper over the open book.
Next, take a plastic sandwich bag. Fill the bag with the melted chocolate. You are going to want to then snip the corner very slightly. If you snip too much you will have very thick candy lines. The smaller the snip, the finer the chocolate lines to make your candy insect.

Hold the bag of melted chocolate and make a line of white chocolate down the crease of the book. This will be the dragonfly body. Next start the outline of wings. The two front wings should be much larger than the back two wings.

This is definitely messy, but so worth it!!

Depending on the size of your book, you can make 3 white chocolate dragonflies at a time. I hope this cake decorating idea is as fun for you to make as it was for my daughter!

Here is another angle so you can see how she is filling in the wings with more white chocolate to make a lattice pattern.

These white chocolate insects are fragile so store them carefully until you are ready to place them to decorate your cake or cupcakes.
