If you don’t look closely, you will drive right past Krung Thai. Although this restaurant is on the main road, it is hidden behind a bunch of trees.
I must admit, this restaurant confuses me to no end. If you call and ask about precautions they take for gluten free orders, they will tell you they don’t take any.
When you go in, they are familiar with what has gluten and can easily steer you towards a safe dish. They use clean pans, utensils, etc.
That being said, our family has eaten at this restaurant about once every two months for at least 3-4 years, and we have never had any adverse gluten contamination reaction. Are we lucky?
I took a friend, who also loves spicy food, out to lunch to celebrate her birthday.
If you are really brave, ask for a side dish of the hot peppers. Some days they are hot, other days it is painfully hot and spicy. The waiter said it varies each day because they make this fresh. Waitstaff taste it every day so they can advise customers how hot it is on any given day.
I ordered a chicken curry and asked them to add broccoli to the dish.
The curries at Krung Thai are all good. When you order, they ask you what level of spice you would like. I always ask for spicy, but they must not believe I can handle it because my dish is never that spicy. I always order the peppers just in case I need to spice something up.
My friend ordered a green stuffed calamari curry. This one wasn’t gluten free, but it really looked yummy.
My advice, if you are gluten free and choose to visit this restaurant, communicate. Tell them what precautions you need them to take. They are very willing to do what you need. Keep in mind there is no separate area of the kitchen to prepare gluten free dishes, and the fryer is shared…but if you know that ahead of time, the menu is pretty easy to navigate. They can also tell you which noodles are rice or wheat in any dish, what dishes have soy sauce and which don’t. Tell them if you need separate water heated up to cook your noodles. (I have not tried a noodle dish, so I can not speak to precautions they take on these menu items.)
Have you tried this restaurant? How was it?
