Ingredient Notes:

Photos of the Alfredo sauce ingredients.
  • Garlic – I use a garlic press to mince my garlic into tiny bits. Jarred garlic is okay, but the pieces of garlic are larger.
  • Heavy Cream – Use heavy whipping cream for this recipe. Half and half will not work.
  • Basil – fresh or dried is fine.
  • Olive Oil – Use extra virgin olive oil.
  • Parmesan Cheese – You can use only parmesan cheese or a combination including romano cheese.
  • Black Pepper – This is optional.
  • Fresh Basil – Optional

Recipe FAQ:

Can you make this Alfredo sauce vegan?

It would be very difficult to use non-dairy milk products in this recipe and get that same classic flavor. Because of this, I have not tested this Alfredo with dairy-free alternatives. This is an excellent recipe to try if you are looking for vegan Alfredo sauce.

Is Alfredo sauce gluten free?

In most cases, Alfredo sauce is naturally gluten free. Always check the ingredients label to make sure.

What are the best gluten free pasta brands to serve this gluten free sauce?

My favorite gluten free pasta is by Jovial. It has the best texture compared to other gluten free pasta brands. I also like Tinkyada (rice pasta), Bionaturae (corn and rice combination), and Sam Mills (corn pasta). I also like Banza because it is a high-protein pasta, but the bean flavor doesn’t go well with the Alfredo flavor.

Is white sauce the same as Alfredo sauce?

A white sauce or béchamel is a French sauce typically made with a roux, while Alfredo sauce is not. The Alfredo sauce originates in Italy.

How long does Alfredo sauce last in the fridge?

Alfredo sauce will last in the fridge for about 4 days. Be sure to store it in an air-tight container, as mentioned below. If you prefer, you can freeze the Alfredo sauce.

    1. Hi Caroline, usually in Alfredo parmesan is used. I haven’t tested it without, but maybe using nutritional yeast? I haven’t tested it, but many vegans use it to get a cheese flavor.

Mmmmm. Alfredo sauce is one of my faves. I’ve never tried it over cauliflower though, what a great idea! I usually make mine with butter, so I’m curious to try it with olive oil instead, but I am like you in that garlic is a must! 😉
