Have you been to Firefly Restaurant yet? Our family loves to dine out in San Francisco.
This is one of the first places I recommend when a gluten free person asks me for a San Francisco restaurant recommendation.
I had a chance to meet Firefly’s owner, Brad, and talk to him about gluten free dining at his restaurant, Firefly Restaurant, in San Francisco. Firefly is getting a large following in the gluten free community because of the special precautions this restaurant takes to keep people safe. Both of Brad’s children have Celiac Disease, so he understands how important it is to maintain strict policies about preventing cross contamination.
Firefly opened 20 years ago and just recently had a big anniversary celebration. About 80% of the foods on the menu are gluten free, including one to two desserts. Each month, Brad meets with his Executive Chef, Chef Sanders, to discuss what fruits and vegetables are in season and bounce recipe ideas off each other. They make and test potential recipes, sticking to their formula of two vegetarian options (one of which is vegan), one poultry, two fish, and two meat dishes.
One of my favorites on the menu is the gluten free fried chicken.
This dish was not always on the menu, but it has developed such a fan following, that the gluten free fried chicken now is available every day of the week. This dish is so good regular customers can’t tell it is gluten free. To perfect this dish, Brad tested over 20 different gluten free flours in about 25 different combinations to come up with the winning recipe for his fried chicken. He even has a gluten free cornbread to serve with the fried chicken.
My kids LOVED the fried chicken and I can see why Firefly has such a loyal following. We ate here for dinner, but the lunch menu looked just as tasty! (And if you want to make your own gluten free fried chicken at home, try this easy recipe!)
