A few months ago, I interviewed the manager at Rok Bistro. I was so intrigued by the concept of cooking your dinner on a hot lava rock that I dragged my husband out for his birthday dinner there 🙂 . Here is the article if want to read about Rok Bistro’s safe gluten handling procedures.
Rok Bistro is located in Old Sunnyvale, a quaint and hip street filled with restaurants and shops. The atmosphere is relaxed and many of the restaurants, including Rok Bistro, have great outside dining.
David and I ordered a sampler dish so we could try a little of everything. It had filet, buffalo, ahi, and chicken. When the waitperson brings out your entree, it is sizzling on the lava rock. You need to quickly remove the meats onto a plate because the meat cooks so quickly. We were instructed to then cut the meat into small pieces and put it back on the lava rock to cook each bite individually to the temperature we like.
Your meal also comes with fun dipping sauces for the meats. All of the meats and dipping sauces are gluten free. (The lava rocks never come into contact with gluten, so they are safe as well.)
Our entree came with several side dishes. Most side dishes are gluten free. Your waitperson can let you know which sides are gluten free when you order.
Our favorite meats were the ahi and filet. The chicken was also tender and flavorful. We were not as fond of the buffalo because it was a tougher meat. Cooking on your table allows you to control the sear on your meat. No more battles if one person likes their meat rare and the other likes their meat medium well. You can cook your meat anyway you like.
And for dessert, David and I decided to save the fondue for another night and try the locally made gelato. The gelato is from a South Bay company named Rumba Desserts. We love that their gelato and ice cream flavors are both egg free and gluten free. These are some of the best gelatos we have ever tried.
Next time we come to Rok Bistro, we are going to try some of their fondues!
