Have you been to Kauai? Our family was fortunate enough to go for a vacation to Kauai this past summer. (You remember that week where two tropical storms were headed for Hawaii? That was when we were vacationing there!)
I am sure you all know how hard it is to be gluten free while traveling.
Our trip was no different. United Airlines made a mistake with our special gluten free orders both to Kauai AND on the return trip back to San Francisco. It seems United has a LOT of trouble keeping their commitment to people who special order gluten free meals for their flights.
By the time we landed, we were starving. Protein bars and snacks can only do so much over five hours. After we landed, we quickly searched for restaurants close to the airport.
I have good news for you if you find yourself traveling to Kauai!
There is a dedicated gluten free cafe and bakery only five minutes away from the Lihue airport! You read that correctly, just 5 short minutes away. When you land you are most likely going to be tired and hungry. Sweet Marie’s is just what you need!
Normally, I don’t write up a restaurant that is so far away, but so many people travel to Kauai I thought it was important to get the word out about this incredible find.
Here is the menu board when we were visiting. When is the last time you had a gluten free monte cristo sandwich?
Now I am going to give a little disclaimer. The day we went to this cafe, every restaurant in town was closed due to some water contamination issue. We were not allowed to order any food… except the amazing muffins that were made the day before.
We bought one of every flavor. Blueberry, Pineapple Macadamia, Mango, and Chocolate.
You can even buy the mix and make these at home, which is what we did since our rental house had a kitchen.
Of course we also bought a few bags of cookies to last over the week 🙂 .
Have you been able to find gluten free cafes and bakeries when you have traveled? I would love to hear what you have found!
