I finally found a good Greek restaurant that I can enjoy in San Jose.
Yiassoo Greek Restaurant is located on S. Bascom Avenue in San Jose.
I do want to preface this review and tell you they don’t get many customers who ask for gluten free. There is no separate menu. In fact, I had to educate them a bit on what I needed.
What I did like is that they listened.
My friend, who is also gluten free, and I decided to come try this restaurant out because I was craving dolmas. For some reason, those are an addiction for me. I used to find fresh dolmas at Whole Foods but I haven’t seen them for months. Someday I will attempt to make these but for today, I decided to take a risk and see if Yiassoo had dolmas that were safe for me to eat.
Yiassoo has a lot of seating inside, but if the weather is nice, you should eat outside on the front patio. The overhead canopies shade all of the tables so no need to worry about a sunburn.
The cashier knew which foods had gluten and which did not. The fryer is shared, so don’t order anything fried.
We opted for salads and dolmas because we figured these had the least possible chance of cross contamination. The marinades used on the meats are gluten free, and this restaurant doesn’t grill any gluten products on their grill.
My friend ordered the lamb Greek salad. The marinade was really delicious and the meat was cooked to perfection. This was our favorite dish, next to the dolmas of course :-). The Greek yogurt dip next to the salad was a great accompaniment.
I ordered the chicken Greek salad. It was also very flavorful, but the meat wasn’t as moist as the lamb.
Here are the dolmas, which I plan to go back for very soon. These dolmas were really good. Sometimes dolmas have sat around and the rice starts to get hard. This was NOT the case at Yiassoo. Their dolmas were freshly made and delicious.
The bottom line:
Neither my friend nor I had any reactions after eating here. If you need extra precautions, just ask. They are very happy to use clean utensils, change their gloves, etc.
