Ingredients

  • 6 cheese sticks * see note
  • ¼ cup gluten free flour blend * see note
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup gluten free bread crumbs * see note
  • ½ cup avocado oil * see note
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil or Italian seasonings salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Grab three shallow bowls. In the first bowl, combine bread crumbs and dried Italian seasonings. Mix the breadcrumb mixture well. In the second shallow bowl, add the gluten free flour blend. Lastly, in the third bowl add the egg and whisk it.
  • Heat up your vegetable oil in a dutch oven or frying pan. I like deep frying foods in a cast-iron skillet or cast-iron Dutch oven on the burner attachment next to our grill to keep the house from smelling like fried foods. You want your oil to reach about 350-365º F before dropping in your gluten free mozzarella sticks.
  • While the oil is heating, cut cheese sticks in half.
  • Roll the sticks in the flour. Make sure the ends and all edges are coated.
  • Dip into the egg mixture. Repeat this one more time. Double dipping will prevent cheese from leaking out.
  • After the final dip in the egg, roll in the bread crumbs and set aside on a plate.
  • Fry each coated cheese stick in the hot oil for 30-60 seconds until the coating becomes golden brown. The cheese melts inside the crispy crust.
  • Remove from the oil with tongs and put them onto a paper towel-lined plate. This will help remove excess oil.

Notes

  1. I used avocado oil because it handles high heat temperatures really well. You could also use coconut oil, which is great for high heat, but note it will leave a coconut after taste...which is a little strange with fried mozzarella sticks. Do NOT use olive oil.
  2. I have tested this recipe with King Arthur Measure for Measure GF and Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 GF blend. That doesn't mean others will not work, I just have not tested other flours.
  3. Use cheese sticks or buy brick-style cheese and cut your own. You can use any flavor of cheese.
  4. You can use store-bought bread crumbs, or save money and make your own gluten free bread crumbs with my easy directions.

SPECIAL NOTE

Please know that every gluten free flour blend has a different starch to grain ratio. If you use a blend I didn't test, you may need to adjust your moisture levels in your baked goods.
