Vegan Fig and Fennel Salad

It is fresh fig season and I am so excited. Figs are the star of this delicious Fig and Fennel Salad. They add just the right amount of sweetness to this salad so that even kids will like it.

Our little fig tree is not producing many figs yet, so I had to buy a big carton of figs at Trader Joe’s today. Who can resist?

Figs come in several varieties. Brown, like I used, green, and even candy stripe. Candy stripe figs are definitely our favorite because they taste like cotton candy! Figs also have many great health benefits and they are full of fiber. They are in season here late summer to early fall. You can do so much with figs, they are not only juicy and delicious raw, but they caramelize when you cook and bake with them.

You can buy figs are your local grocery store, or at the farmer’s market.

(Here is a picture of our little fig tree. We have to fight squirrels for the few figs it grows. Come on little fig tree! Grow!!)


If you haven’t tried fennel, it is worth giving a try! I bet you didn’t know that fennel is part of the carrot family! They are NOTHING alike. Fennel has a slight licorice flavor that comes through both when you eat it raw and when you cook it.

(I also can imagine what you are thinking after reading the title of this salad. Don’t start laughing at me for tossing fennel into the mix. I have been on a fennel kick, mostly because I keep getting it in my weekly farm boxes. At some point I will cry uncle, but for now I am still good with it :-). I did tell you I am addicted to fennel lately, right?)

This fig and fennel salad is an easy salad to make and it tastes so good my kids will even eat it. I added a touch of honey to bring out the sweetness of the figs.

Here is a quick and easy fresh fig and fennel salad recipe.

  • 8 figs cut into quarters
  • 1 large fennel bulb chopped
  • 2 cups baby greens
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  1. In a small bowl, combine dressing ingredients.
  2. Mix well.
  3. In a salad bowl, add all vegetables and figs.
  4. Pour dressing over the salad and toss to mix
