Pears are one of my very favorite fall fruits. They are available most of the year, but they are at their peak during the fall when apples are in season. Pears are delicious fresh, but they can be used to create so many delicious sweet and savory recipes.

Four photos of the most popular pear varieties.

Pear Varieties:

Pears come in many varieties, but these are the most commonly found pears at your local grocery store.

  • Bartlett Pears
  • Anjou Pears (Including Red Anjou)
  • Bosc Pears
  • Comice
  • Asian Pears – I often see these at the market, but I rarely use these in recipes. They are delicious to eat uncooked!

How To Select The Perfect Pears:

When choosing the best pears in the grocery store, look for ripe pears that are firm but yield slightly to gentle pressure near the stem. (Note: You want Bosc and Asian pears to be firm!)

Check the pears for smooth skin without blemishes, scrapes, or bruises. The color of the pears will vary by the variety, so consider the ripeness indicator specific to the type of pear you’re buying. Whether it’s the vibrant green of Anjou pears, the golden hue of Bartletts, or the red blush of Red Bartletts you can’t go wrong with juicy sweet pears.

How To Store Pears:

I always recommend storing leftover pear recipes in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Note: If you store salad, it will only stay fresh for 1-2 days if the dressing is on the salad.

The pear desserts below are freezable and can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer or a zip-style freezer bag.

I always feel like pears fall second to apples in the fall, which is sad. Pears have incredible flavor and can be substituted in your favorite apple desserts. Try swapping fresh, juicy pears in some of these popular apple recipes!

  • Gluten Free Apple Cobbler – (Pictured above.) I recommend using Bartlett, Anjou, or Bosc pears in place of the apples this recipe. It will taste incredible with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!
  • Gluten Free Apple Crisp – I recommend using Bartlett, Anjou, or Bosc pears in this recipe.
  • Gluten Free Apple Dumplings – I think a firmer pear like Bosc is better in a recipe like this because it will hold up to the dumpling pie crust wrap better.
