What are the best breadcrumbs to use?
Double dipping tip:
If you like a crispy coating on your fried cheese sticks, you must double coat your mozzarella sticks. Another reason double dipping is good is that it will prevent your cheese from leaking out when they cook.
Dip the cheese stick first in gluten free flour, then egg, then gluten free panko breadcrumbs. Now repeat! I actually dipped in flour, egg, flour, egg, then the breadcrumbs again.
Make your own gluten free bread crumbs for more control of the flavors!
What oil is best for frying?
Fry the cheese sticks in hot oil. I used avocado oil because it handles high heat temperatures really well. I fried these cheese sticks outside since our grill has a separate burner.
You could also use coconut oil, which is great for high heat, but note it will leave a coconut after taste...which is a little strange with fried mozzarella sticks.
Go ahead and dip these crispy cheese sticks it into a michelada or bloody mary cocktail!
Cheese stick history:
The exact details are a little hazy, but it is believed that cheese sticks are dated all the way back to 1393! There was a recipe in Medieval France in a book called Le Ménagier de Paris. It is unclear where the recipe came from, but whoever it was is a genius!
Can I make in an air fryer?
Yes, you can make these gluten free cheese sticks in the air fryer. You will have to make a couple of adjustments, but they will taste just as good.
First, follow the directions below except don’t fry them in oil. Instead, once they are coated, place them in the freezer on a cookie sheet for 30-45 minutes. This will allow the coating to stay on in the air fryer. Otherwise, you will have chunks of ingredients flying around in there!
It is also a good idea to lightly spritz them with avocado oil when you put them in the Air Fryer basket. Cook for approximately 10 minutes at 400 degrees F.
How do I store leftover mozzarella sticks?
The best way to store leftover gluten free mozzarella sticks is to place them in the freezer in an airtight container. Then when you are ready to eat them, you can warm them in the oven for 10 minutes at 375 degrees.
Check them, and you will know they are done if they are crispy, hot, and the cheese starts to bubble out.
You can also refrigerate cooked leftover mozzarella sticks, but they may not be as crispy when you reheat them. They are best when heated back up in the oven instead of the microwave. They tend to get soggy when microwaved.
Can I bake gluten free mozzarella sticks?
Yes, you can bake these gluten free mozzarella sticks. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Follow the directions and place them on a baking sheet that is lightly coated with cooking spray or use parchment paper.
Bake for 12-16 minutes, turning halfway through. They won’t be as crunchy as when they are fried, but will still taste great!
