Roasted chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans) make a crunchy delicious snack that can't be beaten! My kids thought I was nuts when I decided to make a healthier snack. I told them this air fried snack would be so much better than oily chips.

They were skeptical until they tried some of the fun flavors. So far the winner seems to be ranch with the kids.

If you love healthy snacks, you will love making your own homemade gluten free granola and gluten free granola bars too!

Why this air fryer snack is so great:

    1. These roasted curried chickpeas are naturally gluten free, vegan, and dairy free.
    2. You can customize the spice mix and make these crispy garbanzo beans any flavor.
    3. This snack is high in protein and low fat.
    4. They are easy to pack in a lunchbox or backpack. Just pop them into a baggie!

If you use your air fryer as much as I do, I have quite a few delicious easy gluten free air fryer recipes to try!

    Ingredient notes:

    1. This recipe calls for chickpeas. You can use canned as I did, or you can cook dried garbanzo beans until they are soft.
    2. Use an oil that tolerates high heat. I like to use avocado oil but canola also works well.
    3. See the variations section for a lot of fun flavor combinations!

What air fryer is best for crispy chickpeas?

To be honest, any air fryer is great for making tasty air-fried gluten free foods. I have two air fryers, the Corsori 3.4 qt, and the Ninja Air Fryer 8 qt. They both work really well. I will be testing the Sur de Table air fryer in the next couple of weeks too.

    Recipe step by step directions:

I used canned garbanzo beans. If you are using canned garbanzo beans as well, put them in a colander. Rinse them well. Dry them with a paper towel!

If you want to use cooked garbanzo beans, here is a great tutorial on how to cook garbanzo beans.

chickpeas in a large silver bowl

Step 1: Add your dried chickpeas to a bowl. Add the oil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat.

HINT: Be sure to really dry your chickpeas!! This is a must or your chickpeas will not get super crispy. To dry them, rinse them in a colander. Use a paper towel to really dry them.

garbanzo beans in an air fryer basket ready to roast

Step 2: Preheat the air fryer to 390º F for 4-5 minutes. Place the garbanzo beans into your air fryer.

Be sure they are not piled too high. If you are making more than one can at a time, they won't cook thoroughly so it is best to air fry them in two batches unless you are using a very large air fryer.

Note: I do not recommend using flavor seasoning on the garbanzo beans before air frying them. Many spices can get bitter and rancid from high heat.

Step 3: Air fry the chickpeas for 15-18 minutes. The longer you air fry them, the crispier they will turn out. At the 8 minute mark, open the air fryer quickly and stir the chickpeas so they cook evenly on all sides.

Step 4: Pour the air fried chickpeas into a large bowl and quickly add your seasonings. Toss to coat. Enjoy!

    Oven baking directions:

No air fryer? No problem! It is really simple to make these crispy garbanzo beans in the oven too!

    • Follow all of the directions above to rinse, dry, and oil the beans.
    • Place your chickpeas on a metal baking sheet. I do not recommend parchment paper as it can make your chickpeas less crispy.
    • Bake at 400º F for 12 minutes. Stir them and then bake an additional 10-12 minutes until they are your desired crispiness.
    • Pour them into a bowl and add the seasoning. Toss them to coat.

    Flavor variations:

    • Ranch - Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Penzey's Ranch Seasoning. This is an unsolicited plug for a fabulous spice company. Their spices are gluten free, and you can make endless fun flavors of roasted chickpeas with them.
    • Anti Inflammatory Turmeric and Curry - I made this recipe with 1 teaspoon of turmeric and ½ teaspoon of curry powder.
    • Parmesan - Toss your chickpeas with grated parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
    • Taco - Use 1-2 teaspoons your favorite taco seasoning and sprinkle it over your chickpeas. If you like spicy, add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper too!

    Storage:

Store these air fried chickpeas in an air-tight container or mason jar. These crunchy roasted garbanzo beans will keep fresh in your pantry up to a week.
