Ingredient notes:

  • Gluten free flour blend – King Arthur’s Measure for Measure Gluten Free Blend. That doesn’t mean others will not work; I just have not tested other flours, and I can not guarantee the recipe will work if you use other mixes.
  • Xanthan Gum – If your gluten free flour blend doesn’t contain xanthan gum or guar gum, please add 1 teaspoon.
  • Cheddar cheese – I used sharp cheddar, but mild is also fine to use.

How to make gluten free cheese straws:

Photos of adding ingredients to a food processor.

Step 1: Add the flour, seasoning, butter, and water to a food processor.

Step 2: Add shredded cheese. Close the lid and lock it in place. Turn on the food processor and pulse the ingredients. Increase the speed to mix and run it until the ingredients form a dough ball.

Step 3: Layout a piece of wax paper and place the dough onto the wax paper. Roll the dough out to ¼ inch thickness. (This measurement is flexible; roll to your desired thickness.

HINT: The dough shouldn’t be that sticky; you can lay wax paper over the top to roll it out if you like.

Step 4: Use a pizza wheel to cut long, skinny rows of stick shapes.

Step 5: Twist each straw and sprinkle with salt. Place onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Bake at 375º F for 15-20 minutes, depending on how thick your cheese straws are.

  • Swap out the cheddar cheese for another flavor like parmesan, smoked gouda, or pepper jack!
  • Add in some dried herbs like rosemary or thyme.
  • Try adding garlic powder to the dough to make them more garlicky!
