Why this cake mix is great:

This gluten free chocolate cake mix is great because you always have a delicious cake mix on-hand. You can control the sweetness and the ingredients. Often a store-bough gluten free cake mix will contain an ingredient someone can't have, for example, corn starch. With this mix, you don't have to worry because you use flours that are safe for you.

This keeps in the pantry for up to 10 weeks and you can use this cake mix to make a chocolate cake, brownies, cupcakes, and even mug cakes! If you have ever wondered how to make a gluten free chocolate cake mix from scratch, this is for you!

What you need to make this:

I will get into the measurements in the recipe card below. This list is to help you know what to buy at the grocery store. Here are the gluten free chocolate cake mix ingredients you will need to make this recipe. Note there are a few options to you can tailor this recipe to your specific food allergies or sensitivities.

    • Gluten free flour blend - I like King Arthur Measure for Measure (corn free), Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 GF Blend (corn free), or Authentic Foods Steve's Cake Flour Blend (gum free)
    • OR make your own mix. I like to use a combination of sorghum, brown rice, and tapioca or arrowroot starch.
    • Xanthan Gum or Guar Gum - these are what hold the cake together.
    • Cocoa powder - see below for my recommended brands that are gluten free
    • Sugar
    • Baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

    Is cocoa powder gluten free?

Yes, most cocoa powders are gluten free. It is still important to always read labels, just in case a cocoa powder is made on shared equipment. Here are some of my favorite gluten free cocoa powders:

    • Rodelle Cocoa Powder - made with European Dutch chocolate, this cocoa powder is a winner in making your baked goods taste so chocolaty!
    • My second favorite is by Anthony's. I think it is only available through Amazon, but Anthony's is not only high-quality cocoa powder, but it is organic and a 2-pound bag is about $15! This lasts forever and is great if you are on a budget.
    • Ghirardelli - my favorite local San Francisco brand also has a delicious gluten free cocoa powder.
    • Hershey's - another staple cocoa powder, you can find this in most grocery stores.

    Notes

    1. Many ask if cocoa powders are gluten free. I am glad to say they are, but you should always double-check the label. I like Anthony's (via Amazon), Ghirardelli, and Rodelle brands best.
    2. If you prefer to use a gluten free flour blend, add 3 cups instead of the individual flour.
    3. If you use a gluten free flour blend, check to see if it contains Xanthan Gum. If it does, do NOT add more.
    4. This cake mix will keep up to 10 weeks if it is in an air-tight container.
    5. Print out this chocolate cake recipe card to go with the mix so it can be given as a gift.
